Browser-Based File Transfer
Transfer files between any two devices using only a web browser. No software to install, no accounts to create, no cloud storage involved.
What is browser-based file transfer? It means moving a file from one device to another using only web browsers — no apps, no downloads, no accounts. ShareText uses WebRTC, a browser technology that lets two devices connect directly and transfer data peer-to-peer.
How It Works
When you use ShareText, the file doesn't travel to a cloud server and back. Instead:
- Both devices connect using encrypted browser technology (WebRTC)
- The file moves directly from Device A to Device B
- No copy is stored on any server
- The temporary connection closes when you're done
ShareText vs. Other Methods
What Browsers Are Supported?
ShareText works in any modern browser with WebRTC support:
- Chrome and Edge (desktop and mobile)
- Safari (iOS 15+ and macOS)
- Firefox (desktop and mobile)
Does It Work Offline?
No. Both devices need an internet connection to establish the initial pairing. Once connected, ShareText tries to transfer files directly between devices. If a direct connection isn't possible, it uses a secure relay server as a fallback.
Is the Transfer Encrypted?
Yes. WebRTC connections are encrypted using DTLS (Datagram Transport Layer Security). The data between your two devices is encrypted in transit.
